Glass Shower Doors Built Around Your Bathroom
We install shower doors in Santa Clara and across Silicon Valley, with a focus on frameless glass: heavy tempered panels held by hinges and clamps instead of a metal frame. A good door depends less on the catalog and more on the bathroom it goes into. Walls lean, curbs slope, and the tile in a 1950s alcove is not the tile in a new townhome, so every door we install starts with careful measurements and a plan for how water will be kept inside the shower.
Why so many homeowners choose frameless
Frameless doors use thick glass, usually 3/8 inch and sometimes 1/2 inch, so the glass is stiff enough to stand on its own. With no frame there are fewer places for soap scum and mildew to collect, the tile shows through, and a small bathroom looks larger. Published guides put a frameless door at roughly $1,000 to $2,500 installed for a standard single door, and a door with one fixed panel at roughly $1,400 to $3,300. The price rises with the amount of glass, the hardware finish and whether the glass gets a factory coating. If your budget or your walls point to another style, we install semi-frameless and sliding doors too.
Santa Clara's water is hard, and glass shows it
The City of Santa Clara draws its water from three sources: its own wells, treated surface water from Valley Water, and the San Francisco Hetch Hetchy system. The city's 2021 water quality report lists the wells at 220 to 300 mg/L of hardness, an average of 255, and says groundwater made up about 59 percent of the supply in 2020. Valley Water's own scale calls anything over 180 mg/L very hard. Hetch Hetchy water is far softer, averaging 45 mg/L, and typically serves the part of the city north of Highway 101, but the sources are blended and used interchangeably. In practice, most Santa Clara showers see mineral spotting on glass within days if the glass is left wet.
That is why we talk about the water before you choose a door. A protective coating makes water bead and run off. Some glass, such as Guardian ShowerGuard, has its coating fused on at the factory, while products like Diamon-Fusion are applied by certified applicators. A daily squeegee still matters more than anything else. We also steer clients away from details that trap spotty water, such as low horizontal bars, and explain how each hardware finish holds up to wiping.
Safety glass is not optional
Federal rules in 16 CFR 1201 list shower doors and enclosures, and bathtub doors and enclosures, as Category II glazing, the stricter class of safety testing. The California Residential Code (Section R308.4.5 in the 2022 edition) also treats glass that faces or encloses a bathtub or shower as a hazardous location when its bottom edge is less than 60 inches above the standing surface. Every door and panel we install is tempered safety glass. Tempered shower glass usually carries a small permanent mark in one corner, which is a quick way to check an old door you are unsure about.
Built for mid-century bathrooms
Santa Clara grew from 11,702 residents in 1950 to 58,880 in 1960 and 86,118 by 1970, according to census figures on the city's Wikipedia page. A large share of its houses date from that boom, and many still have their original tub-and-shower alcove or a small stall with a framed door or a curtain rod. Those openings are often a little out of square. Frameless glass can handle that with careful measuring and adjustable hardware, and a tub alcove can take a sliding door, a hinged door or a fixed splash panel, depending on how you use it.
What a typical frameless install includes
- An on-site visit to measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom on finished tile
- A check for blocking or solid backing where hinges and clamps will anchor
- Your choice of glass thickness, clear or low-iron glass, coating and hardware finish
- Removal and disposal of an old door, track and caulk if there is one
- Installation, leveling and adjustment so the door swings and closes cleanly
- Sealing with silicone where needed, and care instructions for hard water

Common Questions
How much does it cost to install a new glass shower door?
This Old House's 2026 guide puts most shower door projects at $530 to $1,390, with frameless doors ranging from $1,100 to more than $5,000. A standard frameless single door often lands around $1,000 to $2,500 installed, and a full frameless enclosure costs more. Bay Area labor tends to run above national averages. We give a written price after measuring.
How often should shower doors be replaced?
There is no fixed schedule. A well-installed tempered glass door can last for decades; what usually wears out is the hardware, seals, sweeps and rollers, which can often be replaced on their own. Replacement makes sense when the frame is corroded, the glass is etched beyond cleaning, or the door is not safety glass.
What is the best coating for glass shower doors?
There is no single right answer, but there are two main types. Factory-applied coatings such as Guardian ShowerGuard are fused to the glass when it is made and are sold as permanent, while applied coatings such as Diamon-Fusion bond to existing glass and are put on by certified applicators. With Santa Clara's hard well water, either type helps, but a daily squeegee is still the biggest factor.
Is a 24-inch shower door too small?
It is allowed but can feel tight. The Uniform Plumbing Code, which California's Plumbing Code is based on, requires a shower door to leave at least a 22-inch unobstructed opening, and a 24-inch door with hinges and a handle comes close to that. Many people are more comfortable at 26 to 30 inches when space allows, and in a small alcove a narrow fixed panel paired with a wider door often helps.
Why do my glass shower doors get white spots so fast in Santa Clara?
The city's water quality report lists Santa Clara's well water at 220 to 300 mg/L of hardness, and wells supplied about 59 percent of the city's water in 2020. When that water dries on glass, it leaves calcium and magnesium behind. Squeegeeing after each shower, a protective coating and good ventilation keep spotting down.
Do I need a permit to replace a shower door in Santa Clara?
It depends on what else is changing. The City of Santa Clara's 2026 fee schedule lists a permit for a like-for-like bathroom remodel, and moving plumbing or rebuilding the shower adds to the scope. Before any larger project, check with the Santa Clara Permit Center at 408-615-2420. Either way, the glass must be tempered safety glass.
Frameless or framed: which is easier to keep clean?
Frameless glass is generally easier because there are no metal channels along the bottom and sides where water, soap and minerals collect. Framed and many sliding doors have tracks that need regular scrubbing. With hard water, fewer edges means less buildup.
